Terms
Last updated 20 October 2026. They cover the Mosaic screen saver, the Mosaic Companion app, and this website.
Free software
Mosaic is free, and its source code is published under the MIT license. You may use, copy, modify and redistribute it under that license. There is no price, subscription or account.
No warranty
Mosaic is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, as the MIT license states. It is a personal project, tested on several Macs but not on every configuration. Keep backups of your photographs, as you would anyway; Mosaic never changes them, but no software is free of bugs.
What is up to you
- What appears on screen. The screen saver shows photographs from your library, or from the albums or folder you choose, while you may be away from your Mac. Photographs hidden in Photos are never shown; choose albums or hide photographs accordingly.
- Downloads. If you allow downloads from iCloud, the copies count toward your network data and the space on your Mac, within the daily and weekly limits Mosaic applies.
- Opening the app. Mosaic Companion is signed but not notarized by Apple, so macOS asks you to allow it the first time. You can build it yourself from the source instead.
Other services
Updates come from GitHub, and iCloud downloads from Apple, each under its own terms. Mosaic is an independent tribute to a screen saver Apple made, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple. Apple, Mac, macOS, Photos and iCloud are trademarks of Apple Inc.
